Less screen time, more “green” time

Mississauga encourages families to head outside this summer

Make memories in Mississauga this summer at the park, by the water or at an event. It’s time to trade in blue light for natural light, replace notifications with the sounds of nature and play physical games and sports. June is Recreation and Parks Month (JRPM), and it helps kick off a summer season filled with outdoor activities for the entire family.

Spending time outside and living in the present moment can help improve your overall health. There are plenty of ways to spend quality time in the city, consider the following activities:

  • Play in the Park: A free, supervised program for kids aged 6–12, offering games, sports, crafts, and themed days in neighborhood parks.
  • Accessible Playgrounds: The city offers six accessible playgrounds, searchable by amenities online.
  • Water Fun: Residents can visit outdoor pools or nearby spray pads to cool off during warm days.
  • Picnicking Spots: Enjoy casual or group picnics in local parks like Erindale, Meadowvale Conservation Area, and Streetsville Memorial Park, with online booking available.
  • Garden Day Event: Happening June 28 at Riverwood, it includes art activities, a park tour, and tips from local horticulturalists.
  • Learn to Fish: Free fishing sessions offered at Lakefront Promenade and Lake Aquitaine with equipment provided—registration via Eventbrite required.
  • Bike Month: Activities include safety workshops, tune-ups, community rides, and a cycling challenge.

The city also emphasizes staying safe in the sun, staying hydrated, and protecting against ticks. It’s all about creating memorable outdoor moments—just minus the blue light. Enoy summer in the city! 🌳🚴‍♀️🌞
