Ever wondered how many worlds we have now on earth. Two. Our real world and our digitalized world of Facebook. Long lost classmates are being located, lost love being found, new friends made, some liked, some unlinked, and all this rigmarole with just a little surfing and a click. Given a serious thought I would say this amounts to nothing less than life being found on earth, let alone Mars. So I wondered what is this Facebook all about and with a little imagination I made a simple deduction that we all teenagers and adults alike embraced a so called social platform delivered to us my the almighty Mark Zuckerberg, raised it, reinforced it and made it larger than life to get more and more people on it. And it’s gaining ground.
During those days to make a mega platform required serious physical effort, muscles and man power. Today with the magic wand of Facebook we expand this mega platform with a little surfing and much time on our hands. Living within this halo of social aroma has given rise to changed concepts of simple basic words which which were never given much importance until now and now mean much to us.
Friend
In the early days a friend was a specific person who was your buddy for the the entire school year, even for ever. Now a simple tweet on Facebook can create a friend.
Everybody likes to be popular amongst their few or many friends. Nobody has 893 friends in a real world. Unfriend Parting with a friend was emotional and would draw a tear to two. Now you just click.
Like
You disliked your teacher in school. Now you like her photo on Facebook.
Unlike You liked your teacher in school. Now you unlike her post on Facebook.
Messages
A pigeon was the carrier of our messages. Then came the Postmaster. Then FedEx. Now Facebook.
Events
Christmas and New year were and are still huge events . Today’s events on Facebook are much larger and we get to create events, even change them.
Status
Wealth and education was used as a yardstick of judging your social and professional standing. Today’s status is your digitalized version of who and what you are which can be upgraded at any time and which is usually encouraged. Amazingly, any one looking at your status profile believes it.
Poke
In school if you poked somebody you would be severally punished. Not anymore. Today one can poke without any fear or of being reprimanded as today’s poke is of a non physical nature and carries with it am element of ” hey, let’s have some fun” And the reality with all this satire is that one can even poke a relative.
Share
A textbook or even an eraser shared in a classroom could make a friend. Sharing was a life line amongst friends , as it created closeness, a bond. Now one can share without making friends. Today’s sharing though carrying more information has cold content, watched more and shared less.
Wall
Before, a Wall was a reminiscence of the past, the German wall, an epitome of prison life. Now the Wall is free and one can write on it, with pride and even be recognized. And it’s not considered graffiti. Best, you no longer post the letter, you Post it on the wall
Tag
A military dog had a name tag round his collar as the corpse on his toe at the morgue. Telephone tag was fun during those days. Cat and mouse loved to play tag. Now one can tag a friend.
Group
In the real world a group can cause a curfew. In the world of Facebook the more the merrier.
Shortcut
It was a back path one took to reach to school before the bell rang. Facebook calls it the privacy shortcut, so the school can never know.
In a nutshell Facebook in today’s digital world has made an impact which I believe is here to stay, has created more good then bad by invoking feelings and emotions, though digitalized, have worked differently and in good ways, has strengthened relations, broken and mended again, shortened distances, made the world more social and a friendlier place and which I prefer to call in my own words , a ” Socioemonio” world, a world of societies with lots of emotions.
To sum it all in a few words. Anyone disbelieving that Facebook has not delivered the core of life to us , would be undermining it.
For now, I believe I have been here too long with my ” check in “status , so I better “check out” Thank you Mark Zuckerberg for this unusual but a wonderful lease of life.
