The 40th session of the world heritage committee of the United Nations educational, scientific and cultural organisation (UNESCO), held in Istanbul, Turkey, declared Khangchendzonga National Park (KNP), Sikkim, India as a world heritage site.
In their presentation to the World Heritage Committee the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) and International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) recognized the outstanding universal values of the National Park in both cultural and natural criteria. These advisory bodies stated that there was strong justification for the “integrity” and “authenticity” of the nominated property and exquisite flora and fauna apart from the unique cultural features of the sacred landscape.
Committee also listed Nalanda University and Chandigarhès Capitol Complex, approving all three nominations linked to India this session.
UNESCO described this Nalanda University Archaeological Site as: It comprises the archaeological remains of a monastic and scholastic institution dating from the 3rd century BCE to the 13th century CE. It includes stupas, shrines, viharas (residential and educational buildings) and important art works in stucco, stone and metal. Nalanda stands out as the most ancient university of the Indian Subcontinent. It engaged in the organized transmission of knowledge over an uninterrupted period of 800 years.
“Much awaited dream come true. CapitolComplex of Chandigarh now a WorldHeritage site. Thanks @UNESCO @RuchiraKamboj,” India’s Culture Ministry tweeted.
